Assignment 1: Narrative based on Non-fiction
In The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, the author reveals that Henrietta did not wish to donate her cells for research and that the family was not exactly pleased with the manner in which her body was used for science. Choose one of the following people from the text and write a narrative from his or her point of view. You should include some of the facts and information from the text, but mostly this will be a fictionalized account of what happened based on your imagination.
Character Perspectives:
Deborah Lacks (Henrietta’s daughter)
David Lacks (Henrietta’s husband)
If you need help getting started, consider the following ideas as food for thought:
1) What time period do you wish to set your story (when Henrietta was living or after her death?)
2) Perhaps you’d like to write from Deborah’s perspective, growing up without her mother and later learning about her HeLa cells.
3) Consider writing from David’s perspective as he realizes his wife is dying or when he finds out that science has taken her cells without his knowledge or approval.
There are many more ways to approach this assignment; feel free to be creative based on the text. Since this is a narrative, your paper will be assessed on descriptive elements such as dialogue, interesting adjectives, vivid verbs, figurative language, etc. You’ll want to consider the elements of a narrative (setting, characterization, plot, style).

This is a discussion board please no more than 2 paragraphs.
The Rococo, a primarily French aristocratic art style, was a display of excessive wealth and power. In contrast, the Age of Enlightenment and Romanticism can be viewed as visual rebellions and evidence of civic unrest.
Use one example of Rococo art and compare it to one example from the Age of Enlightenment or the Age of Romanticism.
Analyze the artwork formally and make connections with the work and the time periods they represent.

This week you will begin working on your Art Appreciation Project by selecting your topic and creating an outline. Please see the Course Project Overview for a comprehensive view of the entire project, which also includes an annotated bibliography and a presentation.
To get started, you will choose an artist or work of art that you enjoy. It does not have to be in our textbook. Here are a few examples of topics students have chosen in the past.
Tattoos as art (focus on a particular tattoo style or tattoo artist)
Comic books and graphic novels as art (focus on a particular artist or character)
Something more traditional: Greek sculpture, the Egyptian Pyramids, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Picasso
Abstract or nonrepresentational art forms; for example, Jackson Pollock
Jewelry, fashion design, everyday objects as art
Automotive design (a certain car model such as a 1965 Mustang)
An unjustly overlooked artist who should be in our textbook, but isn’t
Outlaw artists (graffiti artists such as Banksy)
Digital art
Medieval armor and weaponry
A work of art or artist who changed the world
Please ask your professor for guidance if you are unsure about your topic choice. Your topic must be based on a tangible form of art that can be seen. Please do not choose topics in literature, history, music, or philosophy.
This week you will begin your research presentation project by creating an outline. Please follow this template.
Title of your Presentation: An example is Body Art Really Is Art.
Thesis: This is the main point you wish to make. An example is the following: Although some may dismiss tattoos or even condemn them, a closer look reveals that they are worthy of respect as an art form.
Subject: This is the artist or work(s) of art you will focus on. An example is the following: This presentation will focus on the style of tattoos practiced by the Maoris, the indigenous inhabitants of New Zealand.
Scope of Research: What do you already know? What do you want to find out? An example is the following: I know that the Maoris have practiced tattoo art for hundreds of years. I would like to understand the meaning of the tattoo styles. I am interested in knowing how the Maori tattoo style has influenced tattoos in other cultures. I would also like to know how the Maori feel about the cultural appropriation of their tattoo styles by people from outside the Maori culture.
Scholarly Source: Find one reputable source from the DeVry University Library related to your topic and provide the reference. Tell us in your own words briefly what it is about and how it will be useful to you. For an example, see the Assignment Connection in this week’s lesson.

Include a minimum of 1 image of the artwork or example you are discussing .
Include an MLA bibliography. Please see the “How to Write a Bibliography” page and the Example Essay page to guide you.
Minimum of 500 words.
Any paper that does not meet the above criteria will result in a 0 grade.
Many artists draw from their own cultural background to create their artwork. In section 3 of this book “History and Context” we have studied a wide variety of cultures and the artwork which comes from these communities.
For this assignment you are to refer to Brian Jungen’s artwork, and choose 2 of his works and discuss the following:
Give a brief synopsis of his background. Watch the Art 21 interview, (https://art21.org/artist/brian-jungen/) , and the Art 21 short, https://art21.org/watch/extended-play/brian-jungen-printing-two-perspectives-short/
After watching the videos, what strikes you about his personal history?
What materials does he use in his artwork and what started him using them?
What is the cultural history about choosing materials to make artwork out of?
Discuss how his cultural heritage influences her artwork. Where do his images come from?
What is his main goal?
Google Brian Jungen for additional information
As far as formatting and length and such, I would like at least 500 words. Ideally you have an introduction paragraph which contains a thesis statement, a body of example paragraphs which support your thesis, and a conclusion which summarizes your ideas and opinions. Include the images of the artwork or example you are discussing (it must be relevant to the topic), and a proper bibliography. Please see the Bibliography Know How page and the Example Essay page to guide you.
If you look at the bottom of this page, you’ll see “View Grading Rubric” — that’s exactly how I am going to grade this. Do not forget about the SMARTHINKING service which will critique your essay for free.
